Acupuncture
is a system of medicine with its roots in the Taoist philosophy
of ancient China. According to the Tao, the universe is composed
of a life energy called qi,
which is the essence of existence.
Through
the union of yin and yang, the manifest world comes
into being in the form of the five elements which include fire,
water, earth, metal, and wood. As qi consists of all life activities including
the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual components of humanity,
optimal health is achieved when yin
and yang are in balance allowing for the
free flow of qi.
In the human body, qi
flows along pathways, channels, or meridians, which correspond to
organ systems, related to the yin and yang aspects of each element. Along these meridians, there are many
points from which qi
can be manipulated.
The
insertion of needles into energy centers or points along the meridians
allows for manipulation of qi which results in changes in
the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of being.
Here, acupuncture is used in combination with Tui Na, a massage
system based on the theory of qi manipulation, and botanical
medicine to provide a holistic approach to treating the individual.
